Brooke Johnson Named Lilly Endowment Community Scholar

In December, the Community Foundation of Switzerland County Inc. announced that Switzerland County’s 2020-2021 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar was Abigail Cole.  Following Abigail’s declination of the scholarship this week, the Community Foundation offered the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship to Brooke Johnson, who in December was selected as the first alternate for the award.  The scholarship provides full tuition for four years of undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree.  It also covers all required fees and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment.  It does not cover room, board or travel expenses.  Students receiving the scholarship must attend an accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in Indiana.

Brooke is the daughter of Robert and Kendra Johnson of Bennington.  She plans on attending Indiana University and majoring in accounting and business analytics.  During high school, Brooke has served as the Treasurer of the National Honor Society, participated on the volleyball and swim teams and has been very active in Business Professionals of America (BPA).  She has also volunteered her time for many different community projects and works part-time at Sheri’s Accounting Service and the Switzerland County YMCA.

Abigail, the initial recipient, declined the scholarship after deciding to attend Northern Kentucky University, where she plans to play in the college band.  Since NKU is not located in Indiana, she was not able to accept the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.  Phyllis Weaver, President of the Community Foundation, stated “Each year, plans are put in place for situations like this one. The local selection committee nominates a recipient and two alternates for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.  So, when we receive notification back from Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) regarding the committee’s nominations, it includes who should be offered the scholarship should the initial recipient decline.”

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is a statewide program administered by local community foundations throughout Indiana.  Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) provides statewide oversight of the program.  ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree-granting, nonprofit, independent colleges and universities in the state.  Lilly Endowment, Inc. contracts with them to administer the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program.
