Paul Ogle Foundation Makes Substantial Gift to Jack Sullivan's Scholarship
After Warren T. "Jack" Sullivan, Jr. passed away at the age of 90 on Thanksgiving Day last year, his family established the Jack Sullivan Pharmacy Scholarship at the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc. Because Jack was such a well-known citizen of Switzerland County, many individuals made gifts to the scholarship fund in his memory.
Jack grew up in Vevay and helped his father, a pharmacist, with his drug store. After graduating from high school, Jack went on to graduate from Purdue University's School of Pharmacy. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served as an officer during World War II. After the war in 1946, Jack came home and started working at the family's drugstore. He continued to work there as a pharmacist until he closed Sullivan's Pharmacy in 1996.
Even though Jack put in long hours at his drug store, he still made time for community service. He gave endless hours to many organizations and projects in Switzerland County, including the Kiwanis Club, Board of Health, Switzer Square Senior Citizens, Switzerland Masonic Lodge, and many, many others. As a longtime friend of Paul Ogle, he also was a founding member of the Paul Ogle Foundation and served on its board for 28 years.
When the Board of Directors of the Paul Ogle Foundation heard of Jack's passing, they knew that they wanted to do something to honor him. After some thought, they have decided to contribute $100,000 to the Jack Sullivan Pharmacy Scholarship each year for the next four years. This sizable donation will assist the Sullivan Family in being able to award scholarships to graduates of Switzerland County High School who wish to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
Kent Lanum, executive director of The Paul Ogle Foundation, Inc., stated "In recognition of Jack's service to the Paul Ogle Foundation, we decided that making a gift to his scholarship fund would be a great way to memorialize him and his many years of service as a pharmacist in Switzerland County. We will also be able to help students in Switzerland County who want to follow in Jack's footsteps and become pharmacists."
Jack Sullivan's legacy of community service in Switzerland County will not be forgotten any time soon. The scholarship that has been established in his memory is an endowment, meaning it will be here forever awarding scholarships to area students pursuing their pharmacy degrees.
